Course Description

Students 18 and up encouraged to apply.

Learn how to create expressive representations of the human form, nature, and the built environment. Drawing Skills I introduces students to observational and technical hand drawing techniques from absolute beginners to seasoned artists.

Course Outline

Studio work will be supported by demonstrations and critique. Presentations and discussions of artwork by artists, designers, illustrators, and animators from around the world will provide students with an awareness of a wide range of historic and contemporary approaches to drawing across creative métiers. Please note, this course includes drawing the human figure from a live nude model.

Learner Outcomes

  • During this course of study students will:

    • develop technical skills to render three-dimensional objects in a two-dimensional space that are anatomically and proportionally deliberate

    • develop an understanding of how to observe and render light and shadow

    • explore drawing styles and methods using observation, interpretation, and inventive processes

    • gain a deeper understanding of observational drawing as a form of expression

  • At the end of this course students will:

    • be able to render observed subjects with greater technical skill and formal consideration

    • be able to create drawings with effective design and composition

    • be able to use light and shadow effectively to enhance observational drawings

    • be able to identify and execute a variety of drawing styles
